The US Mega Millions lottery features nine prize divisions. Five winning numbers in addition to the Mega Ball entitle winning players to phenomenal jackpot prizes while partial matches determine winners of the secondary prizes. The winning numbers are chosen from a drum of 1-70, and a Mega Ball is an additional number, chosen from a separate drum of 1-24 that helps lottery fans win the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th prize categories. Mega Millions Set for Historic Transformation: Jackpot Potential to Double in April 2025
The Mega Millions lottery is undergoing its most significant transformation in years, with exciting changes set to take effect on April 8, 2025. This latest evolution aims to create a more thrilling game experience with substantially larger prizes across all tiers.
Following the final draw under the current format on April 4, 2025, Mega Millions will enter what officials are calling a "new era" of lottery gaming. The most notable change is the dramatic increase in potential jackpots, with average top prizes expected to reach approximately $800 million, nearly doubling the current average of $450 million.
The changes include a restructured prize matrix and improved odds. The starting jackpot will more than double from $20 million to an impressive $50 million, ensuring even newly reset jackpots offer life-changing sums. Players will also benefit from slightly better odds, with the chance of winning the jackpot improving to 1 in 290,472,336 from the previous 1 in 302,575,350.
This improvement comes from a small but significant change to the game's structure - the removal of one gold Mega Ball, bringing the total from 25 down to 24. As a result, the overall odds of winning any prize will improve from 1 in 24 to 1 in 23.
"Beyond big jackpots, players told us they want bigger non-jackpot prizes and that's exactly what this new game delivers," said Joshua Johnston, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The prize structure has been completely overhauled to eliminate small wins. The minimum prize will increase from $2 to $10, ensuring players always win more than the cost to play. The most dramatic change comes to the second-tier prize, which jumps from $1 million to a potential $10 million with the new multiplier feature.
Every ticket will now include an automatic multiplier feature (previously optional), which will increase all non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or an exciting new 10X factor. This guarantees substantially larger secondary prizes across all tiers.
These enhancements come with a price increase, as tickets will now cost $5 instead of $2. However, this price already includes the multiplier feature (previously a $1 add-on), and officials emphasize that the value proposition is stronger than ever with the guaranteed prize increases.
The April 2025 changes mark only the second price adjustment in the game's 20-year history, with the previous change occurring in 2017. That update increased the minimum jackpot from $15 million to $40 million and adjusted the matrix to 5/70 + PB 1/25, which at the time made the odds more challenging but led to larger jackpots.
With these transformative updates, Mega Millions continues its tradition of evolving to meet player expectations while delivering ever more thrilling lottery experiences and life-changing prizes!
Mega Millions Lottery Record Jackpots
Mega Millions set the world jackpot record on 30 March 2012 when it awarded a $656 million prize to three lucky winners from Maryland, Kansas, and Illinois. Three colleagues from Maryland’s public education system pooled their money in the draw and purchased tickets as the 'Three Amigos'. The three won a third of this record Mega Millions prize; each of them became a lottery syndicate winner! This huge Mega Millions jackpot would remain the largest jackpot prize ever until Powerball’s epic draw in January 2016 with its $1.586 billion jackpot.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot of all time was the $1.537 billion prize won by a single ticket purchased in South Carolina for the draw on 23 October 2018. That jackpot fell just short of breaking Powerball’s hold on the world record.
US Mega Millions celebrated the new year with some spectacular lottery fireworks – with its jackpot reaching a massive US$1.348 billion before being won by a single ticket purchased in Maine. The extraordinarily lucky winner correctly guessed all the regular numbers 30, 43, 45, 46, and 61, as well as the Mega Ball 14, to score the second-biggest prize in Mega Millions jackpot history!
